Becoming a Referee

Welcome to the first step in becoming a soccer referee!

Effective July 1, 2019, US Soccer has introduced the name Grassroots Referee to replace the former "grades" of 7, 8, and 9.  The US Soccer Digital Learning Center has also became the hub for all registration activities.

You will need to login to the Learning Center and create a profile.  You must be 13 or older to set up an account in the Learning Center.

To become a licensed Grassroots Referee, you will need to complete two phases of training...  Online and Field Clinic.  If you are 18 years old or older, SafeSport certification and a background check will also be required.

- The Online training will be done via the Learning Center. Registration for the Online training costs $20.

- The Field Clinics will be held throughout New Jersey.  Locations, dates, and times will be posted as they are scheduled.  You must register for a Field Clinic via the Learning Center. Registration for a Field Clinic costs $110, which includes US Soccer licensing and liability insurance. This fee also includes a US Soccer Referee uniform and Starter Kit from Official Sports. Information on ordering will be e-mailed to you after you attend your Field Clinic.

- (18 or over only) SafeSport certification will be done online, also via the Learning Center. There is no fee for this certification.

- (18 or over only) A background check will be conducted online. The cost is $30, and will cover you for a 2 year period.

Upon successful completion of all phases of training, you will be licensed as a Grassroots Referee.
