NJ 2024 BECOME A REFEREE PROGRAM

All Entry-Level courses for the 2023-24 registration year are completed.

Please check back in the Learning Center in the upcoming weeks for new course dates.

Do not contact the referee office to ask for dates.

This license is open to any first-time official, or someone who is returning to officiating after being away for 3 or more years.  Your referee license will cost $155 and includes a starter kit uniform.  Uniform order information will be supplied after you attend your in-person class.

This referee license will allow you to officiate any level USSF affiliated travel soccer game as a referee or assistant referee.  There are no restrictions on the level of games you can officiate, but Referee assignments are always subject to the licensed USSF Referee Assignor’s discretion.

Your referee training will consist of 2 parts:

  • 5 online training assignments

  • in-person class

You must complete each step in the order listed.   You cannot take your in-person class prior to completing your online training.  You must register for an in-person session in order to have access to the online training.  The online training will be found in your learning.ussoccer.com (LC) class registration under the Assignments tab.

The date of the class you will register for on the LC will be the date of your in-person class.  Dates of available classes and their locations are posted in the LC.  The deadline for completion of the 5 online training Assignments is Midnight Thursday prior to your scheduled class date.

  • Online Referee Course (previously known as Grassroots Referee Course)- estimated time to complete is 4.5-6 hours.

  • Introduction to Safe and Healthy Playing Environments

  • Referee Quiz

  • Safe Sport Certification (if 18 or older) – approximately 2.5 hours (no additional fee)

  • Complete and pass the US Soccer NCSI Background Check (if 18 or older) ($23 additional fee) – Valid for two years. Takes 7-10 days to clear. Your background check must be cleared before you can attend your in-person class.  We do not accept any other background checks.

If you cannot attend your scheduled in-person class, or do not complete your online training prior to your deadline and are not permitted to attend your in-person class session, you will be given a partial refund ($55 uniform fee and USSF refund of $20 registration), and you will have to sign up and pay for another class.  Once you attend your in-person class, we DO NOT offer any refunds.

Your in-person class will last approximately 7 hours.  Class runs:

  • Registration 8:30am-8:45am. Late arrivers are NOT permitted.  You must attend the entire class on the day you have registered for.

  • Class runs 9am-4:30pm. There will be a 30-minute lunch break around 12pm.  Lunch is NOT provided.

  • A portion of the in-person class is dedicated to practical, on-field aspects. There is no longer a separate field session, but your local assignor/league may offer additional practical training as approved by NJSRC.

  • Information on how to contact Referee Assignors will be provided in the class.

  • Badges will be handed out at the end of class.

You must sign (minors must have an adult sign the form also) and bring with you your Class Waiver in order to attend the in-person class. Waivers can be found posted in your LC class you are registered for under Library>Files.
